Yes. I mean if I weren’t, I wouldn’t have a four-year-old daughter, a girl called Rosamund. Yes, I’m optimistic. But I think, on the whole, pessimism is the best basis for a happy life.

INTERVIEWER: I like the way you say that while laughing, though!

MORTIMER: ’Tis all a great cycle, isn’t it? And you think everybody was different, that earlier generations were different, that your parents were different. Well, not at all. But I always think about my baby and how she’s got to find out all about The Magic Flute and all those wonderful things. And it’s all rather wonderful, really, isn’t it?

The whole interview is a delight (our hostesss, Kate, may well enjoy it, too, for its tales of the legal world): http://www.theparisreview.org/interviews/2466/the-art-of-fiction-no-106-john-mortimerMichael Cartyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09500445252850339161noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5648820059035540727.post-61960510926369336492015-01-11T03:30:40.980-08:002015-01-11T03:30:40.980-08:00I too experience the overwhelming pressure from th...I too experience the overwhelming pressure from the "unconditional positivity" movement who say that even the slightest suggestion that we as a human race have not sorted the world out is "negative". A desire for improvement is read as some kind of problem in today's airbrushed world. So, whilst I am myself a great optimist, I'm prepared to point out areas where we as a human race have lost the plot - some kind of "eeyore" of the business consulting world. I believe that clients who are interested in being their best are genuinely interested in that and don't wish to have their egos stroked. That said, the old Chinese proverb "The nail that sticks up will be hammered down" and I occasionally find it wearing when standing more or less alone on issues of HR and humanity. However, life as a heretic has never been easy.

I hope that we are genuinely at a turning point where we are about to make changes that finally balance our relationship with the planet, but I'm also aware that we've been at this precipice before.

Keep on keepin' on

PeterPeter Cookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01645716374242755943noreply@blogger.com
